Cover your firewood.
We know the love-hate relationship with combustion heaters because we have one: but managing winter firewood is a pain.
They’re lovey in winter. The rain’s coming down and it’s cold outside – but inside you’re all snug, warm, and cosy, enjoying your hot chocolate, coffee, or red wine in front of your combustion heater’s beautiful glowing embers and flickering flames giving out the most beautiful warmth to embrace you.
No other heating method beats it. Read a book, watch a movie, play a board game, or simply cuddle up to your partner …there’s nothing else like the warmth and atmosphere of a combustion heater!
THEN – someone says, “we need another log” – OMG!!!! Who’s going out in the cold, rainy weather to get the next piece of wet timber? Then, when you put the wet log on, it will sizzle and spit and won’t catch until it dries out. It smoulders and the smoke builds up, but eventually it does catch fire (slowly) … and we all breath a collective sigh of relief …. Until the next log is needed!!!
We know this scenario all too well! So, as owners of Hideaway and having a combustion heater ourselves, we decided to provide a permanent fix for this – for us, and for you.
Introducing
The Hideaway Covers’ firewood storage solution which have a range of shapes, sizes, and options that solve your firewood problems:
- Storage: The main issue with getting one or two cubic metres of firewood, is just where do you store all this when it is delivered? Modern homes simply don’t have the amount of spare storage room required for such a large amount of firewood. Inevitably it just gets stacked alongside the house somewhere – open to all the weather, and vermin and looks just plain ugly. Alternatively, it’s stacked against the fence for everyone to see. If you try to stack it in your garage, just look at the amount of room that it takes up. Couldn’t that valuable space be used for something far better, and with less risk of possible damage to your car?
- Appearance: There is nothing particularly attractive about stored firewood (we’re not talking here about display home perfect sized, perfect stacked, but never used firewood). It’s just messy and gets messier as you use it. Think about the appearance of the left over stack all through summer, spring, and autumn. Wouldn’t it look a lot nicer and neater to have this mess out of sight?
- Access: Sure, a pile of timber stacked up against the house or fence has easy access. Just remember that you shouldn’t really store timber against a house as it can start to erode the surface structure of the house because of a lack of ventilation and constant moisture. This can lead to internal plasterboard lining mould problems, termites, or leaching in brickwork. A neatly stacked pile of firewood, contained within a purpose designed enclosure with good all-round ventilation will allow you to stack your timber anywhere, and higher, without the risk of it falling down either side.
- Weather: This is the most frustrating part of timber storage. Inevitably, when you want to use your combustion heater to warm your house, Murphy’s Law says that it will be raining. This means that your uncovered timber is soaked through and will only smoulder and not burn properly. Once the logs in the middle of the stack get wet, they take a long time to dry out. Sure, you can use blue tarps to cover it (even more ugly). Sure, you can keep a few dry logs inside, but how long does it take for the whole stack of wet firewood to dry out…days and sometimes weeks, and that’s not good if you have several rainy days in a row. You’ll quickly run out any dry timber inside.
- Vermin: Tarps, plastic, canvas covers all provide an easy shelter for animals (e.g. snakes, opossums, rats/mice, spiders, lizards) that are also looking for a dry spot to keep out of the rain. Do your really want to have to deal with that?
If you have pride in your home and its appearance, and you have a combustion heater, then there is any easy solution to all these annoying issues.
